Hi, I am a Catholic who is a little confused. Is the Sabbath Saturday (the seventh day of the week)? and if so why is the best church in the world not obeying
God's commandment to keep the Sabbath Holy?

The 10 Commandments tell us to keep the sabbath holy but does not actually specify which day. The Jews , as we know, chose Saturday. As Christians we chose
Sunday because Jesus rose on a Sunday. There may be some confusion over Jesus' day because it was also Passover which is Sabbath too.

mransome wrote:Saturday is indeed the ancient Semitic sabbath that was kept holy by the Jews, but the Old Covenant rules dealing with the calendar (which is a human device) were deemed to be under the jurisdiction of the authority delegated to the Church under the New Covenant (whatever you bind on earth...). Some Jews that claimed to believe in Christ were trying to keep both Saturday and Sunday as holy days, so to distinguish between the true believers and the unbelievers (who kept only Saturday) Sunday was made the only holy day observance for Christians in about the fourth century. Almost all the Old Covenant initiation ceremonies (circumcision), calendar festivals and sabbaths, dietary rules, and temple sacrifices were dropped or replaced, If one professed to believe that Jesus was the messiah (Christ) of Israel, and had authority to bring the New Covenant, and was a new law giver, one had to accept the authority of His apostles and their successors who did away with or changed many old practices. |
