Putting religion aside for the moment, doesn't the struggle through the death of a loved one not make us stronger; doesn't the battle against the pain of a life-threatening disease build character? The people I know who have battle cancer and won are better people for it nad even those that lost the battle left a legacy of courage that lives on.
I seems to me that Atheists and Agnostics seem perfectly happy with accepting blood, death and suffering as part of the human condition, but as soon as you insert God into the picture they are scandalized.
